The Old Girls were able to field a strong side this year but acting Captain Philly Roberts was only able to manage the team due to injury. Although the game started slowly the visitors set up a good move between Lizzy Grainger and Lucy Booth with Jenny Young finishing off in the circle for a 1-0 lead. A couple of good chances for the school pressurised the OW defence and Tori Shanklin in goal (on loan from the school for the match ) made some good saves. The 2nd goal for the visitors began in midfield when Emily Otter’s pass found Charlotte Roberts in the circle and a reverse stick shot beat all the defence. It was encouraging to see the OW’s playing so well together and with the added incentive of substitutes they all knew a chance of a rest on the side line was a good incentive! The 3rd goal came when Jenny Young’s reverse stick shot was well saved only to be tapped in by Lucy Booth. A well worked short corner allowed Charlotte Roberts a strike to increase the score to 4-0. The school defended valiantly and looked dangerous on the break but were unable to find the net. Towards half time Jenny Young got her second goal from a short corner and her cross set up Lizzy Grainger in front of goal for a 6-0 lead. With a reshuffle of players and Charlotte Roberts on loan to the school to assist the defence the 2nd half was most entertaining. The school pressurised the OWs forcing short corners and attacking with more determination. The girls defence of Hannah Baker, Ellen Blackie , Pippa Shanklin and Livvi Baker managed to contain the school despite running short of pace as legs tired. A quick break towards the end of the half saw Lizzy Grainger one on one with the keeper and managed to slip it accurately over the line. The school never gave up and were rewarded with a Jaz Oakley goal before the whistle. Many thanks to Phil Berry and Haydn Griffiths for excellent umpiring of a most enjoyable game.
